Yes, this is real wood! Each is made in the USA from sequential sheets of veneer hand-selected for outstanding character and figure. These veneers are permanently bonded to a resin-saturated paper backing which allows maximum flexibility. Each sheet then goes through a multi-step sanding process for a perfect finish. High-end veneers like these are great for heirloom furniture, cabinetry, stereo speakers, and automotive dashboards.

Product Reviews

  1. Excellent Walnut Veneer, Nice Grain and Great Color

    Review by Benjamin Blanco
    Rating:

This veneer looks great, has a nice thick paper back, and the wood isn't too thin either.

I used this walnut veneer to cover some speakers I built, and I really wanted to recreate the look that I achieved with a cedar board that I used to make a number plaque for my house. I had used PolyShades Black, and went over it with a urethane seal/finish. The way the grain popped was amazing. But after testing on some scraps, it didn't look like I would get the same effect -- at least not on the whole veneer.

Instead, I used just the urethane after sanding smooth with 400 grit paper. I'm two coats in now, but even after the first coat it looked amazing. The walnut has features where the grain looks like it's pinched tight and twisted in areas, and I knew it would look great with the satin finish. It has not disappointed.

This veneer is pretty thick. If you are using Heat Lock and veneering a large surface with a lot of thermal mass, you may have to apply a lot of heat before it really bonds. But once it's on, it's solid. Another potential issue the thickness creates is it will be difficult to cut with a utility blade. A sharp one works, but they dull quickly. Do yourself a favor and swap them when they get dull. And use a router if you have one, it's much easier and cleaner.

That's just for trimming though. For cutting to size, scissors work fine. Or if you are careful, one or two shallow passes with a utility blade and then it basically snaps in two, which is fine if you are working with smaller pieces.

I was able to cover two 12 x 14 x 8.5 inch speakers with one 2' x 8' sheet, and still had a lot left over, but I was careful to layout my cuts before so I didn't waste a bunch.
