Puzzle Box

Veneer: Aboyna burl
Comments: The puzzle box takes 56 moves to solve. It won 1st place in the Missouri State Industrial Arts in woodworking, for the most unique and creative project. He named it "The Rolls-Royce" puzzle box, because Rolls-Royce used amboyna burl veneer for a lot of their dashboards back in the day. It has bubble-quilt maple veneer interior.

Veneer: Walnut Burl
Comments: The veneer softener was also a great purchase as it helped a great deal. I used the orbital sander to get up to 600 grit. It got way smoother than I ever expected burl to be. I intentionally did not use pore filler. I am fine with the burl in this more natural and textured state. The finish I used was simply 5 coats of Tru-Oil. This was my first time as a woodworker dealing with veneer and it was quite the learning experience!

Award-Winning Bureau Table
Created by M.L. Bolton
Veneer: Curly Cherry, Curly Sapele, and Pommele Sapele
Comments: Curly sapele veneers were used for the table's sides and back, and premium pommele sapele veneer was used in the table top. All inlays and stringing were made from curly cherry. The table frame was finished with multiple coats of oil/varnish, with a hand rubbed out finish. The drawers (interior and sides) were finished with multiple coats of 1.5# Super Blond shellac. The table top was finished with oil/varnish, multiple coats of 1.5# Super Blonde shellac, along with a topcoat of lacquer for water protection and durability. All surfaces received a final coat of premium wax, hand buffed for a final finish.
I was humbled and honored that this commissioned piece was juried into both the 2021 Texas Furniture Makers Show and the international furniture designer and maker competition (this year held in Sydney, Australia), "Maker of the Year" awards. This bureau table received the Society of American Period Furniture Maker Award in the Texas Furniture Makers Show. I did not finish in the top ten in the Maker of the Year competition, but was awarded a "Commended" (U.S. term for Honorable Mention) award. Again I was very humbled and honored in these prestigious furniture designer and maker competitions.

Automotive Panels
Created by Marvin Berhow
Veneer: Tamo Ash
Comments: West Systems Epoxy advised that I could use two types of epoxy. One for the adhesive and another type for the finish. According to West System's suggestion, I could apply five or six coats without waiting for each coat to dry and sanding between coats. They advised applying each successive coat when the previous was still tacky. That helped the coats adhere better plus it eliminated the time needed to sand between coats. I allowed several hours for the final coat to dry, and then leveled the surface with 180 grit followed by successive finer grades of sandpaper, finishing with 400 grit. Then I applied three finish coats of automotive clear (because of their UH inhibitors) over the epoxy and buffed that out with automotive buffing compound and a buffing wheel. I've been to several car shows and have had many people compliment the veneer part of the project.
