Walnut Burl Wood Veneer

cat-walnut-burl-better.jpgThis highly prized burl is native to the west coast of the United States (from California to Washington). The burls typically come from cultivated orchards where nut-producing English walnut (Juglans regia) trees are grafted onto California walnut (Juglans hindsii) rootstocks. This grafting process creates stress that triggers burl formation at the base of the tree known as the "root bole". The burls are sustainably harvested when the trees are removed to replant the orchard.

Claro walnut burl is a classic beauty, and each sheet is as unique as a fingerprint. It is used on everything from fine furniture to automobiles. The rich brown color can be accented with a light coat of penetrating stain to bring out the figure in these wood veneer sheets.

Walnut is one of only a handful of species that lightens with exposure to UV light. Vintage walnut furniture pieces are usually very warm in color. This lightening process can take a couple of weeks to several years to fully develop.
