Comments: These photos are of the two projects that I entered in the San Diego Fair Design in Wood Competition.  Each one won "Honorable Mention" and both were made using veneer I purchased from VeneerSupplies.com and the vacuum press system constructed from components purchased from here as well. The bubinga was four-way book matched before being applied to the drawers. The humidor lid is about 170 pieces of veneer made into a panel then glued to MDF using the vacuum press.

Comments: This is a sculpture depicting the America's Cup winner from the early 1900's known as "Reliance". This is an example of thinking outside the box in the use of veneers. The olive ash burl veneer in the sails holds it’s shape quite well after being heated and bent. The café doors utilize quilted maple, curly maple and olive ash. Overlaid on the veneer are carvings depicting a waterfront scene as viewed from the customer's deck.

Comments: Here are pictures of a large cigar room art nouveau coffee table. The size is 22" high x 60" wide x 80" long. It took me a little over 1200 hours in a five month time period to design and make this piece. Comments: I made every piece of this myself from black maple and then veneered 1/4" ply with burl and flat sawn walnut on the inside and right side that shows. The carvings were done on my carve wright machine. Drawers are dovetailed boxwood and walnut.

Comments: This one is fully automated in that when you lift the lid – the front drops down and two drawers swing out to the sides.  When you close the lid, the wings retract and the front closes and latches automatically.  I made all the hardware with the exception of the lock.

Old Style Quebec Cabinets

Comments: The first is an old style Quebec cabinet. The wood is solid white pine dyed and principal veneers is figured spanish cedar and prima vera. The second is a dresser cabinet from solid Quebec ash (a little brown than white ash) and the principal veneer is teak. My marquetry is based on David Roentgen's work.

Table Pedestal

Comments: This is an interlocking dining table pedestal that supports 3/4" thick tempered glass and seats eight people. My client loves squares, and the square bull's eye on top sports quilted sapele, walnut burl, lacewood, and Brazilian rosewood. Normally, they don't go together. The dyed pear string inlay is continuous and connects each side with those adjoining it. I also used copper inlay in a couple locations - twice on the top and as a border for each cubby.  I also used some sand shading in a couple places.  This was one of those rare projects in which the client told me to do what I wanted. The entire concept came from my brain... not sure if that is bad or good!

Comments: The quilted Apa is matched with sapele and ash burl. The pillars are ABS pipe wrapped with Eucalyptus burl with some dark walnut stain. The cross pieces are just rounded pine with the same stained Eucalyptus burl.

Comments: Here are some photos of a table I made using some of the copper I bought from Veneer Supplies using my vacuum pump, bag and glue also bought from Veneer Supplies.  The vacuum pump and bag certainly make it so much easier to get veneers glued to wavy tops like this.

Cascade Display

Comments: The piece is seven feet tall and measures about 18" square at the base. It's all marquetry with walnut and walnut burl. The piece is entitled "Cascade" because the dark burl flows down on both sides of the piece. It was shot outside in the shade but seems to have reflected blue from the background paper.
