TransTints are highly concentrated, metal-complex liquid dyes used in woodworking and finishing to color wood. They can also be used to tone and tint clear finishes such as shellac, lacquer, and water-based polyurethane. Simply mix with water or with alcohol for deep penetration.

All TransTint dyes are intermixable with each other, so custom colors can be easily created. A chart showing the available dye colors can be found here.

These dyes are more lightfast when compared to conventional aniline powdered type dye stains. This unique concentrated formulation allows the user great latitude in using the dye because it is compatible with such a wide variety of finishing products. No waiting or straining is necessary because the dye compound is pre-dissolved!

Stain and Finishing Options

  1. Water-Based Dye Stain: Mix with tap or distilled water for an economical, non-flammable stain.
  2. Non-Grain Raising Dye Stain: Mix with alcohol for a fast-drying, non-grain raising stain.
  3. Hybrid Dye Stain: Mix with a 50/50 solution of water and alcohol for a user-friendly wipe-on stain.

More Information

  • pg-transtints-quote.gifSuggested mix ratio is 2 oz. dye per 1/2 gallon solvent, but this ratio can be increased or decreased to adjust the color and saturation as needed.
  • Dye solution can be applied by brush, rag, spray, or sponge. When using a water-reduced dye, a pre-grain raising is advisable.
  • One of TransTint's outstanding features is its compatibility with a wide range of finishing mediums. Simply add the dye concentrate directly to shellac, water-base finishes, solvent lacquers, and catalyzed varnish or lacquers. Add any amount up to 1 oz. per quart.

When using any dye or colorant, we highly recommend testing your colors first on scraps or cut-offs along with your selected top coat before applying to your projects. TransTint Dyes are not for exterior use and can not be mixed with oil-based products.

Please note that this item is non-returnable.

  1. Transtint Dye- A Great Product

    Review by Kenny Stone
    Rating:

This is a great product. I have been using it for years. I love it because it still lets the grain of the wood be seen. It's my main go-to stain, using it mainly on oak, this dye makes a great finish. You can make it as light or as dark as you want. I apply a clear coat of varnish as the top coat and people really like it. I mainly buy my Transtint dye from Veneer Supplies. This is a great company to buy from. I mainly buy the red and green dye.

  2. TransTint Red - Best Wood Dye Around!

    Review by Max Shepherd
    Rating:

I've experimented with many red dyes to completely dye veneer all the way through, and not just on the surface! This stuff was the best of them all and greatly surpasses the other dies on the market! Love this stuff!

  3. I Love the Red Violin Kind of Vibe

    Review by Georges Ainmelk
    Rating:

I got this to stain my longbows. The results are terrific. A few drops of TransTint go a long way if mixed with Tru-Oil finish. My longbow looks like a Stradivarius concert violin. The hues are out of this century. My longbow looks Colonial New England now. It has patina. It has a new character.

Mixing two TransTint dyes works best especially if you let them sit for a couple of days. Some people use denatured alcohol or filtered water. I use Tru-Oil finish which of course is a linseed oil. After mixing it, I let it sit for 4 to 7 days and I apply 1-2 layers with no sanding. After all, it is a longbow I am building not a violin.

For a gun stock, sanding between coats is a must, especially if
you want to have that Mauser or Steyr European gentleman-hunter' rifle look and feel. A smooth, light reflecting, deep patterned and silky effect can exacerbate a rifle beyond its function. It can make it look distinguished, historical, and affected.

With TransTint, you can even make a gun stock look like a piece of art.

Next project, I will add a few drops to a 2-part epoxy resin mix that I will use to coat a jewelry box with.

The possibilities are myriad. I am a very happy camper.

  4. Great service and Prices on TransTint Dyes

    Review by Owen Holman
    Rating:

I'm new to epoxy filling and found some videos using TransTint dye. It works way better than I ever expected. I started small with two colors on walnut, then decided to expand my options. I found Veneer Supplies had the best overall price (even compared to the giants). I prefer doing business with the smaller individuals.

Great order tracking, great communications, great prices and great folks. What else can you ask for?

  5. You gotta love it!

    Review by Greg Stallings
    Rating:

This product is great and the fact that they offer it at a great price makes it even better. I like to try out blending different tones and colors. At this price I can use a quality product and not worry about breaking the bank. This red is beautiful. I just stocked up on a variety of colors, but this is my favorite. Make it a deep tone and smother in nitrocellulose...oh yeah!

  6. Outstanding customer service

    Review by Deborah Bloom
    Rating:

After finding Transtint a few years ago I have abandoned all other tints in favor of this brand. I've used it for a buildable wood stain to layered epoxy. With that said I was thrilled to find it at this price point with exceptional customer service. I order quite a bit online and I have found lately that ordering directly from independent retailers is easier and more cost-efficient than Amazon in many cases.

  8. Review from Glendale, AZ

    Review by Jeff Dennis
    Rating:

I was looking for some Transtint dyes for staining my guitar kit projects. I searched the net extensively and found VeneerSupplies.com. The price was great, approximately 40% less than the large box supplier. I'm generally weary about ordering from sites not associated with larger on-line retailers, but thought I would give Veneer Supplies a try. The experience was great. The communication was excellent and my goods arrived in a timely fashion. My thanks to Joe and the staff at VeneerSupplies.com for their excellent service and a great on-line ordering experience.

  9. Review from Tampa, FL

    Review by Jay Lathrop
    Rating:

I love the Trans Tint dyes. I use them both to tint wood and tint intercoat clear auto paint that I spray on guitars.

Not only does VeneerSupplies.com have the best price their selection is phenomenal and they always seem to have the product in stock when I need it. This is always the first (and usually last) place I go when I need this dye as well as any other veneering supplies. Great customer service, great prices and fast shipping. You can't ask for much more.

  10. Review from Greeneville, TN

    Review by Erik Haagensen
    Rating:

Great price, shipped quick, excellent instructions from Joe. We used these to dye some utility shelves from reclaimed store shelves and weathered 2x4s and they are so colorful and fun. Nice to see the wood grain and weathering patterns in the wood through the rich color. Mixed great with other dye colors, we applied two coats in water based polyurethane.

The clarity you get from dyes is fantastic. You may never go back to stain again. You get any tone you want without loosing the grain. The price here was the best on the net when I got them on sale. And the service can't be beat. Ordered at 9:20 P.M. PST, shipped 9 hours later. Fantastic!
