TransTints are highly concentrated, metal-complex liquid dyes used in woodworking and finishing to color wood. They can also be used to tone and tint clear finishes such as shellac, lacquer, and water-based polyurethane. Simply mix with water or with alcohol for deep penetration. All TransTint dyes are intermixable with each other, so custom colors can be easily created.

These dyes are more lightfast when compared to conventional aniline powdered type dye stains. This unique concentrated formulation allows the user great latitude in using the dye because it is compatible with such a wide variety of finishing products. No waiting or straining is necessary because the dye compound is pre-dissolved!

Please note that the Transtint bottle style may vary.

Instructions for Use

Stain and Finishing Options

  1. Water-Based Dye Stain: Mix with tap or distilled water for an economical, non-flammable stain.
  2. Non-Grain Raising Dye Stain: Mix with alcohol for a fast-drying, non-grain raising stain.
  3. Hybrid Dye Stain: Mix with a 50/50 solution of water and alcohol for a user-friendly wipe-on stain.

More Information

  • Suggested mix ratio is 2 oz. dye per 1/2 gallon solvent, but this ratio can be increased or decreased to adjust the color and saturation as needed.
    _
  • Dye solution can be applied by brush, rag, spray, or sponge. When using a water-reduced dye, a pre-grain raising is advisable.
    _
  • One of TransTint's outstanding features is its compatibility with a wide range of finishing mediums. Simply add the dye concentrate directly to shellac, water-base finishes, solvent lacquers, and catalyzed varnish or lacquers. Add any amount up to 1 oz. per quart.

When using any dye or colorant, we highly recommend testing your colors first on scraps or cut-offs along with your selected top coat before applying to your projects. TransTint Dyes are not for exterior use and can not be mixed with oil-based products.

Please note that this item is non-returnable.

Pricing Information
We are required by the manufacturer to display a minimum price of $22 per bottle. However, our actual price will be shown when this item is added to your cart.

General Finishes requires all sellers of TransTint dye to comply with their "MAP" (minimum advertised price) policy. This is often required by manufacturers to prevent small businesses like us, who sometimes have lower overhead costs, from selling a product with too great of a discount. If you find this product advertised anywhere for less than $22, please let us know.

Product Reviews

  1. Long-Time User

    Review by Louis Garbi
    Rating:

I have used TransTint dyes for several years and like the enhancement they give by applying them directly to the wood. They mix well with water, alcohol, lacquer thinner, etc. The folks who own this business are very nice to deal with. My orders have been promptly shipped.

  2. Excellent Product

Excellent product. Easy to use and mix with other colours to create an infinite colour palette. Easily thinned with just about any solvent or even water.

  3. Transtint Order - Very pleased with Veneer Supplies

    Review by Jason Robbins
    Rating:

Veneer Suppliesis such an amazing company. I love these guys. The prices are fantastic, the shipping is great and the communication is second to none! I would HIGHLY recommend them.

The Transtint dye is fantastic. I used the Medium Brown and the Dark Vintage Maple for my guitar build and could not be more pleased. The color is spot on, and goes a LONG way. I did several tests (and I mean several), and then the guitar... and I only used about 4% of each of the bottles. The Dark Vintage Maple will be perfect for the neck. It looks EXACTLY like an old vintage Fender maple neck.

  4. Favorite Dye Based Stain

    Review by Joe Van Notric
    Rating:

I love these stains and the pricing that Veneersupplies.com is able to offer - our main shop is in Hawaii, and it's great to be able to source these almost as if I was still on the mainland. These are simply the best dye based stains I've used, and we will continue to use these as long as they remain in production!

  5. Great Small Business

    Review by Joe Meylor
    Rating:

Great small business with great products and great service -- price of product and shipping are very reasonable and better than the 'big' web sites. Received the product within 5 business days and am totally pleased with this small business.

  6. Excellent for That Vintage Look on Maple Guitar Necks

    Review by Todd Hall
    Rating:

I love Transtint Dyes, and VeneerSupplies has the best price I've found. I build 3 or 4 electric guitars each month, and I love the Dark Vintage Maple on my maple necks. Dyes are super easy to use and the 2 oz bottles last a long time.

  7. Great Product and Service

    Review by Bob Plummer
    Rating:

I have ordered this product before, only in a different shade, and am very happy with the product and the end results. Not only is it a great deal but the service is unbeatable. I received my order on the third day from placing it. I have ordered other products from Veneer Supplies before and I can't say enough about the quality of the products and the service. Any questions concerning the product or uses or suggestions are answered quickly by Joe himself. Can't get that kind of service from Amazon or most other retailers.

  8. The Best Pricing I have Seen

    Review by Steve Burke
    Rating:

I have used Transtint dyes now for over a year. I only wish I had been introduced to this product sooner!. I find that I am constantly using these dyes to tweak coloring to get just the look I am after. Mostly I find myself using them as an aid to conceal the coloring variance in different boards. They are also compatible with just about everything, a real plus. The only mistake I made in buying this product was not buying it at this particular web site, as this is the best pricing I have seen anywhere for this product (seriously....feel free to look around yourself). Needless to say, now that I have found this new source for Transtint dyes, I know where to buy them in the future.
