A reconstituted veneer is a man-made product using a wood commonly called obeche. These veneers are systematically dyed to mimic the look of their real wood counterparts. The beauty of this type of veneer is its outstanding color and grain consistency from sheet to sheet. These veneer sheets are a great alternative to natural veneers which are inherently imperfect and impossible to perfectly match. Reconstituted wood veneers are defect-free and identical from one sheet to another when purchased together, making them a great option for projects where consistency is critical.
The process begins by rotary slicing the logs to yield sheets of veneer. The veneer is dyed for color by soaking in nontoxic water-based dyes for about 12 hours. The sheets are then collated in stacks, with a layer of transparent glue between each sheet. The collated veneer goes into a mold, which presses them together to form a solid block of wood. The block is then sliced to yield veneer of a certain design or wood structure, depending on the type of cut.
Staining & Finishing
Since this paper-backed veneer is a wood product, it can be stained/dyed easily and requires no special top-coats or finishes. Aniline dyes, oil and water based stains, Transtints, polyurethane, lacquer, conversion varnish, shellac, and tung oil are all compatible with our paper-backed veneers.

Backing Type:
|
The standard paper backing is 10 mil thick. This is the ideal combination of quality and price for most uses. A 20 mil backing is available using the option box above. This option is most often used on horizontal surfaces with less than perfectly smooth substrates. The face veneer is the same thickness regardless of the backing size. |
