Cocobolo Wood Veneer

Cocobolo VeneerEven the name of this wood veneer can ignite a certain passion in the heart of a woodworker. This exceptionally rare tree is not often found outside of national parks and preserves. In fact, some species are currently listed as "endangered" by CITES. Because of its oustanding acoustic properties, this species has been a favorite among the world's finest guitar builders.

Common Name:   Cocobolo, and often wrongly called Granadillo or Coral Rosewood

  Dalbergia retusa or Dalbergia hypoleuca
Family:
  Leguminosae
Color:
  Orange and reddish-brown with dark brown or black streaks
Origin:
  Nicaragua, Honduras, Panama, Mexico, and Costa Rica
Hardness:
  Very hard
Texture:
  Fine, even
Finishing:
  Readily accepts stains and finishes
Restrictions:   This species is regulated by CITES and due to regulations set forth by the United States Department of Fish and Wildlife, we can not ship this veneer outside of the USA.
Did You Know:   The cocobolo tree can reach a height of more than 80 feet and has a specific gravity of over 1.0 so it will often sink in water.
