Burl - The most sought after figure; burls have circles of random cell growth
Curly - Cross-grain ripples of shimmer where cell orientation is uneven; also known as "tiger stripe" figure
Mottled - Angular rays of shimmer with sharp edges and highly iridescent
Pommele - Resembles rain drops cascading down a window
Quartersawn - Sliced to yield a very straight grain
Quilted - A "high-end" figure with rolling iridescence in distinguished clusters
Uncommon Figure - Any odd figure that doesn't fit into the categories above

Backer - cheap wood veneer that is suitable for backing/balancing a veneered panel
Oddsize - veneers that have an unusual shape
Narrow - veneers that are exceptionally narrow compared to their normal length
Buck - veneer which is less than $1 per square foot
Random - a grouping of veneers that are not sequential (usually a great value)
